Do I Need Orthodontic Treatment Before An Implant?

Have you been researching cosmetic dentistry, and are wondering whether you should get orthodontic treatment beforehand (or instead of all together!) If so, continue reading as we outline exactly what cosmetic dentistry is, and what our specialist orthodontist Dr Theresia Sudjalim recommends.

Cosmetic dentistry is a branch of dentistry that focuses on improving the appearance of the teeth, mouth, and smile. Cosmetic dental procedures can be used to whiten teeth, repair chips or cracks in teeth, recontour teeth or replace missing teeth. These procedures can help improve the overall appearance of the teeth and smile, and can also improve the function of the teeth and mouth. Some common cosmetic dental procedures include teeth whitening, veneers and dental implants.

Many dentists and orthodontists will recommend starting orthodontic treatment before some forms of cosmetic dentistry, in particular dental implants. If you are an adult, and have missing teeth, a dental implant may be recommended to complete your smile. A dental implant is a small titanium post that is surgically implanted into the jawbone, where it acts as a replacement for the missing tooth root. The implant is then topped with a replacement tooth (crown), which restores the appearance and function of the missing tooth.

Most cosmetic dentists will recommend their patients undergo orthodontic treatment before starting the dental implant process. This is because orthodontic treatment such as braces can help improve the alignment of the teeth and bite, which can make it easier to place the dental implant in the correct position.

At Hawthorn Orthodontics, we have a great working relationship with many cosmetic dentists in Melbourne and we work closely with them to together achieve your dream smile.
