Orthodontic FAQs

If you are interested in Orthodontic Treatment in Hawthorn

Are braces just for cosmetic reasons?

Braces are designed to correct misaligned, crooked, or overcrowded teeth. There’s no doubt that the result is a more beautiful smile but by correcting misaligned teeth, braces can also improve the function of your bite. If your teeth are not aligned correctly, you may experience pain and discomfort when you eat, talk, or even just open your mouth. By correcting these issues, braces can help to alleviate these symptoms and improve your overall quality of life.

What are the different types of orthodontic treatment offered at Hawthorn Orthodontics?

Hawthorn Orthodontics are thrilled to offer their patients clear aligner treatment, traditional metal braces, lingual braces, lightforce braces, gold braces, ceramic braces and early intervention treatment for children.  Each treatment option comes with its own advantages. Dr Theresia will inform you of all of your options at your consultation appointment and help you choose which option is best for you, the treatment outcome and your lifestyle.

During orthodontic treatment, what are elastics used for?

Orthodontic elastic bands are small bands made out of a stretchable elastic material. Elastic bands are typically used during orthodontic treatment to improve alignment of teeth, jaws and bite. In most cases, elastics are generally worn during certain stages of your treatment and can also be worn several different ways to achieve the orthodontic outcomes required.

How long will my orthodontic treatment take?

Orthodontic treatment time usually ranges anywhere between 6 months – 2 years. The amount of time treatment goes for is dependent on the complexity of each case and the concerns that are to be addressed. When you have your consultation, Dr Theresia will inform you of the expected timeframe of the treatment you have elected to proceed with.

How often do I have to visit the clinic during treatment?

Commonly, you will need to visit the clinic every 8-12 weeks for adjustment appointments. This can vary from case to case but be rest assured that Dr Theresia and her team will let you know exactly when you need to be seen. With Invisalign treatment, generally you change your aligners every 1-2 weeks at home. At Hawthorn Orthodontics, we do offer software to be able to monitor your progress from home via your smartphone. This will allow you to be in contact with the clinic ensuring that you are changing your aligners at the perfect time and your treatment is progressing as it should.

How are braces tightened?

Orthodontic braces are tightened through regular adjustments by your orthodontist. During these appointments, Dr Theresia may replace the archwire with a thicker one, place springs or elastics, or make adjustments to the braces. The tightening process increases the pressure on the teeth slightly which promotes movement to achieve the final result.

Is it painful to have braces?

A common conversation point around orthodontics is that they are painful, this is a common misconception and at most you may feel slight discomfort for 1-2 days after your treatment has started. This discomfort is easily managed. We have found that this misconception does come down to each individual’s own tolerance levels.

How much does orthodontic treatment cost?

At Hawthorn Orthodontics, we believe that orthodontic treatment is a valuable investment in achieving a confident smile. We strive to provide exceptional service and quality to our patients by offering competitive pricing and flexible payment options, including zero interest financing over 24 months. The cost of braces and clear aligners like Invisalign is typically similar, but may vary based on the complexity and duration of treatment. We customise our treatment plans to meet individual needs, and during your consultation, our team will provide recommendations, cost details, and financing options. Our pricing ranges from $990 to $4,500 for early orthodontics, $4,500 to $6,900 for minor orthodontics, and starts from $8,500 for comprehensive treatment. We accept various payment providers without any surcharges, making our orthodontic payment plans affordable and interest-free.

Do I still need to see my general dentist during orthodontic treatment?

Attending your regular dentist for check ups during your orthodontic treatment is vital to ensure that the teeth and gums are healthy during this time. It does become more difficult to clean your teeth whilst undergoing orthodontic treatment as food can get trapped around your brackets and wires. Your general dentist can remove any plaque buildup caused by trapped food and also ensure there aren’t any cavities or decalcification lesions developing.

What will happen when you come in for your consultation?

The aim of our consultations is to make sure that you have all of the information you need to make the best decision for you. We do this by making sure we gather all of the relevant information we need to be able to discuss your options with you. This starts by taking photographs and X-rays of your teeth and jaws. This will give us a big picture as to what treatment may need to be completed. Dr Theresia will then complete a full examination of your teeth and jaws, recording measurements and teeth numbers during this. After Dr Theresia and her clinical team have this information collated, Dr Theresia will then discuss your treatment options with you and help you decide which options suit your lifestyle the best. At Hawthorn Orthodontics, we encourage our patients to ask questions so we know that they are fully aware of what options are available.

Why do I need retainers?

After going through orthodontic treatment, the last thing you want is for your teeth to try and move back to where they were. Retainers are vital in keeping the teeth in alignment after treatment. Dr Theresia will advise you as to how often you need to wear your retainers. The frequency of retainer wear is standardly every night straight after your treatment has been completed and is decreased over time as advised by Dr Theresia.

Am I able to participate in sports when I have braces?

Yes, we certainly encourage you to still play your favourite sports during your orthodontic treatment. We strongly recommend that you wear an orthodontic mouthguard when playing to protect your teeth and braces, just as you would generally wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth when not undergoing orthodontic treatment.

What are the foods that you should avoid during orthodontic treatment?

We advise our patients to steer away from foods that are sticky, chewy or very hard. These types of food are known to break orthodontic appliances which can prolong your treatment.

How are braces removed?

When you reach the stage of having your braces removed, it may come as a shock to how quick and simple the process is. To remove braces, we simply gently squeeze each bracket with a specialised instrument which loosens the bracket from the tooth. You may hear popping sounds as the brackets come away from the teeth which is normal. The final step is for us to softly polish any remaining adhesive left behind from the brackets. This process doesn’t cause any damage to the teeth.

When do I change my aligners?

Aligners are changed every 1-2 weeks. Dr Theresia will inform you as to when you should be changing to your next set of aligners. Our home monitoring software also makes this earlier for patients who are undergoing Invisalign treatment to know when they need to swap to their next set of aligners.
